Korea has fined a video-sharing app TikTok for misusing children’s data. TikTok has to pay 25 million fine.
The Korea Communications Commission has fined the video-sharing app TikTok 18 crore 60 lakhs won. The amount is 1 crore 85 lakhs in Nepali rupees.
South Korea’s fine is 3 percent of the TikTok’s annual income.
During an investigation that began last year, regulators found that TikTok users’ data had been used in an unauthorized manner and that children were among the victims of such data misuse.
The investigation found that TikTok’s activities violated local privacy laws. It did not inform users that their personal data was being sent to other countries.
On the other hand, TikTok said that it is deeply committed to fulfilling the obligations as per the law. “We are adhering to the highest standards of data privacy and are constantly working to make our standards even stronger,” said a TikTok spokesperson.
The credibility crisis has erupted after South Korea imposed fines just days after India, the world’s largest TikTok user, banned TikTok. The United States has also signaled a ban on Chinese social media, including TikTok.
Last February, The United States has fined 5.7 million to TikTok’s former company Musically. The US Federal Bureau of Commerce has fined the musical for failing to protect the privacy of children’s data.
TikTok has already announced that it will leave Hong Kong as soon as the Chinese security law will be implemented. Now, It is another bad news for the TikTok company that TikTok has to pay 25 million fine.
