On May 11, there was a cyberattack on the Archer Supercomputer at the University of Edinburgh. Due to which the computer was inactive. On the same day, five different German supercomputers were shutting down due to cyber attacks.

Since then, hackers have attacked more supercomputers in Germany, as well as supercomputers in Switzerland and Spain.

The university said it was working with the UK’s National Cyber Security Center to restore the supercomputer, which has a corona virus epidemiology modeling tool installed.

The UK’s National Cyber Security Center said it was aware of the incident and was providing necessary assistance to computers affected by the cyber attack.

Hackers seized the computer’s Secure Shell (SSH) connection system and attacked the supercomputer. SSH is a system that is used by academic researchers to login to a supercomputer’s system remotely.

The hackers used a cryptocurrency mining virus to infiltrate supercomputer systems.
